Questions About Zakat
The nisab is the least wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many scholars advise the silver nisab, which is lower, so that more people give.
Cash, bank balances, gold and silver, shares, stock held for trade and money you expect to be repaid. Your home, car and personal belongings are not counted.
When your wealth has stayed above the nisab for one full lunar year (a hawl). Many people pay in Ramadan, but the date is your own anniversary.
Zakat is kept apart from other gifts and paid only to the eight groups named in the Quran: the poor and needy first, through our food bank, rent help and students' fund.
