How Many Pizzas For Twelve People?

The short answer is five party pies for a regular crowd. The long answer is about area, appetite and the friend who always takes the last slice.

Count Square Inches, Not Slices

A party slice is not a medium slice. An 18-inch pie has 254 square inches of pizza; a 12-inch has 113. So we plan by area: about 60 square inches for a regular appetite, 85 for a hungry crowd, half that for a child.

“Twelve hungry friends is not twelve medium pizzas. It is four party pies and a large, and nobody leaves hungry.”

Marco Bellini, head pizzaiolo

Three Rules For A Crowd

  1. Plan one vegetarian pie for every four vegetarians, rounded up.
  2. Mix sizes: party pies are cheapest per inch, a large or medium mops up the rest.
  3. Add a side for every four guests; drinks are one each.

We used this for a birthday of fourteen: five party pies and exactly two slices left. Spot on.

The kids-count-half rule is the bit nobody thinks of. Saved us a whole pie.
