Wrapped pallets in a warehouse

Why A Light Box Can Cost More Than A Heavy One

A carrier sells space as well as lift. A pallet of pillows fills a ULD long before it reaches the plane's weight limit, so every mode counts a volume weight beside the real one and charges the greater of the two.

Measure twice, book once: the dimensions on the booking are the ones on the invoice.

The Divisors, Mode By Mode

The size in cubic centimetres divided by the divisor gives the volume weight in kilograms. By sea one cubic metre counts as a tonne.

Road Freight
Divide by 3,000: 1 m³ = 333 kg
Ocean Freight
Divide by 1,000: 1 m³ = 1,000 kg
Air Freight
Divide by 6,000: 1 m³ = 167 kg
Rail Freight
Divide by 3,000: 1 m³ = 333 kg

A Worked Example

Four cartons of 80 x 60 x 50 cm at 55 kg each weigh 220 kg and take 0.96 m³. By air that is 160 kg by volume, so the real weight is charged; by road it is 320 kg by volume, and the volume is charged.

On rail too, Steve: 333 kg a cubic metre, the same as road.
